Where this record's text came from. faceted 2026-08 by reading the locally held text (html); every evidence string verified as an exact substring of that text before merging. This is a Journal Club commentary, not a primary study, so 'review' is the closest method value and the method_evidence is the editor's note that appears in the article body. The two limitation entries are strictly caveats about the reviewed study (Hannula and Ranganath, 2008) rather than about a study this piece ran itself — they are included because the commentary's own conclusion depends on them, and the framing is flagged here. Replication status is 'contested' because the commentary explicitly notes that the opposite hippocampal pattern (mismatch > match) was found under incidental conditions by Kumaran and Maguire (2006). 2026-08-12 and 2026-08-15 schema-0.3 passes: every quote verified as an exact substring of the staged text and anchored at merge time; concept terms verified present; every edge endpoint an existing node.
This record’s own method is review, and the tags below follow from that. A review’s findings, quantities and statistics are things stated IN this paper, and some of them report results obtained elsewhere. 2 tags on this page name the author the result belongs to. Measured across every review in this corpus, 81% of a review’s tags carry no citation at all — most of them are the review speaking. The corpus does not adjudicate the rest: read an unmarked tag as a claim this paper makes, not necessarily one it made first.

phenomenonhippocampal contribution to short-term associative memory— “We know from neuropsychological evidence, therefore, that the hippocampus is critical to short-term memory for associative information.”
claim-typemechanism— “These results suggest that the hippocampus plays an important role in the encoding and retrieval, but perhaps not the active maintenance, of novel associative information in short-term memory.”
method — evidence— “Editor's Note: These short, critical reviews of recent papers in the Journal, written exclusively by graduate students or postdoctoral fellows, are intended to summarize the important findings of the paper and provide additional insight and commentary.”
object of study — evidence— “Hannula and Ranganath (2008) use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to address this important issue by characterizing brain activity during each phase of a short-term associative memory task and by linking such neural activity to behavioral performance.”
research question — evidence— “What is not clear from the neuropsychological data, however, is how the hippocampus supports this function.”
transferfrom : Match enhancement, established in monkey inferotemporal and perirhinal single-unit work, imported to read a human hippocampal fMRI result— “As such, the findings observed by Hannula and Ranganath (2008) resemble the well known phenomenon of “match enhancement” observed in monkey inferotemporal/perirhinal cortex in relation to the…transfers[0]
transferfrom : The subsequent-memory design, developed for long-term recognition memory, applied to a short-term task - which required deliberately making the task hard enough to avoid ceiling performance

mechanismthe hippocampus holds short-term associative information by transiently changing synaptic efficacy rather than by sustained firing across the delay

mechanisms[0]
mechanismthe task being performed sets the amplitude of the hippocampal response to novel or familiar input, so top-down task demands determine whether match or mismatch produces the larger signal

mechanismThe commentary's own resolution of the conflicting match/mismatch results: the size of the hippocampal response to novelty depends on what task is being performed, with top-down influence present in explicit recognition and absent in automatic detection

differs inKumaran and Maguire (2006) — THE AXIS IS WHETHER THE MEMORY JUDGMENT IS EXPLICIT OR INCIDENTAL. 'when the novelty/familiarity of associative information is incidental to the task at hand (i.e., subjects are not required to make explicit recognition memory judgments), a qualitatively different pattern of findings has been observed with hippocampal activation maximal under conditions of mismatch rather than match.' The direction of the hippocampal effect REVERSES on a task-instruction parameter - the strongest form this field takes, because the two literatures are not in conflict at all once the parameter is named.

differs inperirhinal cortex —contrasted-with→ hippocampus — THE AXIS IS WHAT KIND OF INFORMATION IS BEING HELD. 'Whereas the perirhinal cortex appears to support short-term memory for novel object information, neuropsychological evidence suggests that the hippocampus is critical when associative information is involved.' Both structures support short-term memory; the division is BY CONTENT, NOT BY DURATION - which is the point, since duration is what the literature usually divides them by.

differs inallocentric —distinct-from→ egocentric — THE AXIS IS THE REFERENCE FRAME, AND THE MANIPULATION THAT ENFORCES IT IS GIVEN. 'To encourage use of A HIPPOCAMPALLY MEDIATED ALLOCENTRIC (OR WORLD-CENTERED) strategy, rather than an egocentric (OR VIEWER-CENTERED) STRATEGY thought to rely on parietal and prefrontal cortices, subjects were asked to FORM A mental image of the scene rotated 90 [degrees].' The two frames are not observed and distinguished - one is INDUCED BY AN INSTRUCTION, so the result is conditional on subjects complying with it. A row of Kravitz2011 in this corpus gives the same axis as an anatomical tendency, hedged on both sides.

When we have changed our mind. Some entries in the table begin with a word in capitals and the reason for it. EVIDENCE CORRECTED — the finding still stands, but we had quoted the wrong sentence from the paper, and the quotation has been replaced with the right one. RETRACTED — the entry itself was wrong; it stays on the page, marked, with the reason, rather than being deleted. WITHDRAWN AND REPLACED — the entry was wrong, and a corrected version of it appears in the entries below. Each mark carries its own reason, in brackets, because the reasons differ from one entry to the next. An entry we have WITHDRAWN is removed from this page and kept in the record, with its reason. A line reading Audit and a date is a later re-reading of the entry against its whole sentence: DOUBTFUL means it was kept, and the reason says what is loose about it. Quotation marks inside the tagger's sentence. Where a tag is the tagger's own sentence, a phrase in quotation marks inside it is borrowed from the paper — the tagger's wording around it is not. The paper's own sentence is the evidence quote for that row; on this page it is withheld with the article, and the article is at its publisher. Nothing inside quotation marks anywhere on this page is ours: if it is quoted, it is the paper's. Whose words a concept carries. A concept entry records a term the paper itself uses, so the term, the sense given for it, and its evidence are the paper's own words, quoted where the paper fixes them. This is the opposite of a sense entry in the tag table, which is the tagger's sentence about how the paper uses a term. Where a concept entry could not be grounded in the paper's words, the entry says so on its own row.
