Spike timing of entire cell assemblies has a more substantial impact on effective connectivity than individual cell pairs. Using closed-loop optogenetic stimulation in CA1 of freely moving mice, unique spike patterns were generated between presynaptic pyramidal cells and postsynaptic parvalbumin cells, revealing an unexpected plasticity mechanism in converging assemblies.

First behavioral model of short-term priming in lab animals. Establishes an auditory discrimination paradigm for studying response priming in freely moving mice, finding a priming effect in success rate driven by differential interference from incongruent stimuli. Opens the door to studying the cellular-network basis of priming.

Hybrid FVB/NJ x C57BL/6J mice show reduced anxiety, improved learning, enhanced long-term spatial memory, and better sensorimotor performance with aging. Hybrids support optogenetic control and exhibit typical hippocampal rate and phase coding, providing an improved model for neurobehavioral studies.
