Neural underpinnings of the evidence accumulator — TEI-tagged view

Where this record's text came from. faceted 2026-08 by reading the locally held text (xml); every evidence string verified as an exact substring of that text before merging. Claim type could arguably be 'null-result' — the pivotal finding it reports is that 'In contrast to expectations, however, inactivation of the PPC produced entirely negligible effects on performance of the Poisson Clicks task [ 53 ].' — but as a review its own contribution is the case against PPC as the accumulator, hence 'critique'. Claim relations is deliberately thin: the review's explicit disagreements (e.g. with the 1-to-1 PPC-accumulator proposal, and the retraction of its own serial PPC→FOF model in 'As we describe below, this serial model turned out to be wrong.') are either self-directed or supported only by bare numeric citations, so per the rules they were not recorded as relations. Replication status is 'contested' because the review documents PPC inactivation impairing rodent visual, but not auditory, accumulation tasks. 2026-08-12, 2026-08-14 and 2026-08-15 schema-0.3 passes: every quote verified as an exact substring of the staged text and anchored at merge time; concept terms verified present; every edge endpoint an existing node.
5 quotations on this page contain a reference number where the paper printed a superscript. This journal style prints citations as raised numerals — parameters12,13 — and the extraction flattened them into the line, so the sentence reads parameters 12 , 13 . The digits are citation markers and not part of what the author wrote. The quotes keep them for the same reason they keep every other extraction fault: a quote is reproduced exactly or it proves nothing.
This record’s own method is review, and the tags below follow from that. A review’s findings, quantities and statistics are things stated IN this paper, and some of them report results obtained elsewhere. No tag on this page names a different author. Measured across every review in this corpus, 81% of a review’s tags carry no citation at all — most of them are the review speaking. The corpus does not adjudicate the rest: read an unmarked tag as a claim this paper makes, not necessarily one it made first.
Tags on this paper every tag the record carries, whether or not the words occur in the text below — a number is how many papers in the corpus carry that tag; a tag with no number is unique to this paper

phenomenongradual accumulation of evidence in perceptual decision-making— “Gradual accumulation of evidence favoring one or another choice is considered a core component of many different types of decisions, and has been the subject of many neurophysiological studies in non-human primates.”
claim-typecritique— “Consequently, we consider the PPC to have the lowest likelihood of being an important center of the causally relevant circuit for gradual evidence accumulation.”
method — evidence— “Here we will first briefly describe studies with non-human primates into the neural basis of the evidence accumulator.”
object of study — evidence— “To study the macro- and micro-circuitry causally responsible for gradual accumulation, we must first know which brain regions are part of that circuitry.”
mechanismWhen evidence is weak the accumulator drifts only slowly away from the decision boundary, so it takes longer to establish which side it is on, which is why difficult decisions are slow.— “In this model, when the evidence is strong, the accumulator’s value quickly diverges away from the decision boundary, and it rapidly become easy to say on which side of the decision boundary it is.”mechanisms[0]
mechanismFOF acts downstream of accumulation, categorizing the accumulator's value into a choice, which is why its activity is required near the go cue rather than throughout the stimulus.— “the FOF’s main role in the task lies in categorizing the value of the accumulator, an operation that occurs after the graded evidence accumulation itself”mechanisms[1]
mechanismDiscrepant PPC inactivation results across rodent visual tasks may arise because the inactivation spreads beyond PPC into neighbouring small secondary visual areas that supply sensory input.— “the observed effects from inactivations targeting rodent PPC could perhaps be due to inactivation spillover into one of the many small V2 areas”mechanisms[2]
mechanismEncoding was inferred from ramping firing rates that rise faster on easy trials than hard ones, exactly as the accumulator model predicts— “Critically, when averaged across easy trials, firing rates ramped slowly; but when averaged across difficult trials, firing rates ramped much more sharply--precisely as expected of the evidence accumulator ([ 25 – 27 ]; Fig. 1b ).”mechanisms[3]
mechanismTuning curves separate two regions that look alike in averages: one reads out the graded value, the other a categorical side of the boundary— “Thus what is best read out from FOF firing is not the graded value of the accumulator, but rather which categorical decision report the subject should make if the trial ended at that point in time.”mechanisms[4]
mechanismA region can be required at a specific moment rather than throughout, which optogenetic timing can test and lesions cannot— “The tens of milliseconds time resolution afforded by optogenetic inactivation, in this case using the virally-delivered, light-activated chloride pump eNpHR3.0 [ 52 ] injected unilaterally into the FOF, allowed probing and confirming the hypothesis about the specific times when activity in the FOF would be required (see Fig 2f ; [ 45…mechanisms[5]
mechanismMicrostimulation cannot localise its own effect, because it acts largely on axons passing through rather than on the cells at the sitemechanisms[6]
mechanismThe proposed test for circuit membership is three conditions at once - inactivation matters, it matters during the accumulation window specifically, and the graded value is encoded there

When we have changed our mind. Some entries in the table begin with a word in capitals and the reason for it. EVIDENCE CORRECTED — the finding still stands, but we had quoted the wrong sentence from the paper, and the quotation has been replaced with the right one. RETRACTED — the entry itself was wrong; it stays on the page, marked, with the reason, rather than being deleted. WITHDRAWN AND REPLACED — the entry was wrong, and a corrected version of it appears in the entries below. Each mark carries its own reason, in brackets, because the reasons differ from one entry to the next. An entry we have WITHDRAWN is removed from this page and kept in the record, with its reason. A line reading Audit and a date is a later re-reading of the entry against its whole sentence: DOUBTFUL means it was kept, and the reason says what is loose about it. Quotation marks inside the tagger's sentence. Where a tag is the tagger's own sentence, a phrase in quotation marks inside it is borrowed from the paper — the tagger's wording around it is not. The paper's own sentence is the evidence quote for that row; on this page it is withheld with the article, and the article is at its publisher. Nothing inside quotation marks anywhere on this page is ours: if it is quoted, it is the paper's. Whose words a concept carries. A concept entry records a term the paper itself uses, so the term, the sense given for it, and its evidence are the paper's own words, quoted where the paper fixes them. This is the opposite of a sense entry in the tag table, which is the tagger's sentence about how the paper uses a term. Where a concept entry could not be grounded in the paper's words, the entry says so on its own row.
