Relating Introspective Accuracy to Individual Differences in Brain Structure — TEI-tagged view

Where this record's text came from. faceted 2026-08 by reading the locally held text (xml); every evidence string verified as an exact substring of that text before merging. Claim relations is empty as a finding, not an omission: this Science report cites all prior work by bracketed numeral only (e.g. '( 16 - 18 )', '( 11 )'), so nowhere in the article text does it relate its claim to a NAMED prior study, and rule 7 forbids inferring a relation from a bare citation. method is recorded as structural-mri because the study used voxel-based morphometry and diffusion tensor imaging, not functional MRI; no term in the suggested method list covers structural neuroimaging, and labelling it 'fmri' would be false. Spacing inside the XML-derived text ('d’ and B roc', '( A roc )') is the source's own and was copied exactly. 2026-08-12 and 2026-08-15 schema-0.3 passes: every quote verified as an exact substring of the staged text and anchored at merge time; concept terms verified present; every edge endpoint an existing node.
8 quotations on this page contain a reference number where the paper printed a superscript. This journal style prints citations as raised numerals — parameters12,13 — and the extraction flattened them into the line, so the sentence reads parameters 12 , 13 . The digits are citation markers and not part of what the author wrote. The quotes keep them for the same reason they keep every other extraction fault: a quote is reproduced exactly or it proves nothing.

phenomenonmetacognitive sensitivity— “In this context, introspective or “metacognitive” sensitivity refers to the ability to discriminate correct from incorrect perceptual decisions ( 1 ), and its accuracy is essential for the appropriate guidance of decision making and action ( 2 , 3 ).”
claim-typeexistence— “We show that introspective ability is correlated with gray matter volume in anterior prefrontal cortex, a region which shows striking evolutionary development in humans.”
method — evidence— “We objectively quantified variability in metacognitive sensitivity between individuals, and then related these inter-individual differences to brain structure measured using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).”
object of study — evidence— “We dissociated variation in introspective ability from objective performance in a simple perceptual decision task, allowing us to determine whether this inter-individual variability was associated with a distinct neural substrate.”
mechanismanterior prefrontal cortex supports introspective accuracy by carrying out second-order operations that integrate supramodal perceptual information with the decision output, thereby linking performance to confidence— “Anterior subdivisions of prefrontal cortex have been implicated in high-level control of cognition ( 19 , 20 , 26 , 27 ), and are well placed to integrate supramodal perceptual information with decision output ( 28 ), a process thought to be key for…mechanisms[0]

Statistics — cross-field join keys
field-invariant statistical terms, used in their statistical sense (gated on a number / symbol / test). A p-value or a standard deviation means the SAME thing in physics, biology, psychology and sociology — so these are the strongest cross-field join keys. Grounded verbatim.

When we have changed our mind. Some entries in the table begin with a word in capitals and the reason for it. EVIDENCE CORRECTED — the finding still stands, but we had quoted the wrong sentence from the paper, and the quotation has been replaced with the right one. RETRACTED — the entry itself was wrong; it stays on the page, marked, with the reason, rather than being deleted. WITHDRAWN AND REPLACED — the entry was wrong, and a corrected version of it appears in the entries below. Each mark carries its own reason, in brackets, because the reasons differ from one entry to the next. An entry we have WITHDRAWN is removed from this page and kept in the record, with its reason. A line reading Audit and a date is a later re-reading of the entry against its whole sentence: DOUBTFUL means it was kept, and the reason says what is loose about it. Quotation marks inside the tagger's sentence. Where a tag is the tagger's own sentence, a phrase in quotation marks inside it is borrowed from the paper — the tagger's wording around it is not. The paper's own sentence is the evidence quote for that row; on this page it is withheld with the article, and the article is at its publisher. Nothing inside quotation marks anywhere on this page is ours: if it is quoted, it is the paper's. Whose words a concept carries. A concept entry records a term the paper itself uses, so the term, the sense given for it, and its evidence are the paper's own words, quoted where the paper fixes them. This is the opposite of a sense entry in the tag table, which is the tagger's sentence about how the paper uses a term. Where a concept entry could not be grounded in the paper's words, the entry says so on its own row.
