Internally Generated Reactivation of Single Neurons in Human Hippocampus During Free Recall — TEI-tagged view

Where this record's text came from. faceted 2026-08 by reading the locally held text (xml); every evidence string verified as an exact substring of that text before merging. This source cites all prior work by numbered reference with no author names, so claim relations targets are described by reference number; both relations rest on explicit self-positioning sentences ('Our results ... now directly link', 'unlike the situation in our study'), and the second one names its target only in the preceding sentence ('Selective increases in single-unit activation during mental imagery of stationary stimuli have been reported ( 25 ).'). Bare citations to the fMRI reinstatement literature (refs 21-24) were deliberately not turned into relations. The paper's interpretive claim — that this reactivation is the neuronal correlate of the subjective emergence of recollection — is offered as a suggestion rather than a demonstrated mechanism, so claim type stays 'existence'. 2026-08-12 and 2026-08-15 schema-0.3 passes: every quote verified as an exact substring of the staged text and anchored at merge time; concept terms verified present; every edge endpoint an existing node.
2 quotations on this page contain a reference number where the paper printed a superscript. This journal style prints citations as raised numerals — parameters12,13 — and the extraction flattened them into the line, so the sentence reads parameters 12 , 13 . The digits are citation markers and not part of what the author wrote. The quotes keep them for the same reason they keep every other extraction fault: a quote is reproduced exactly or it proves nothing.

phenomenonsingle-neuron reactivation during free recall— “The same neurons showed an increased firing rate again with free conscious recall, before the verbal report, when the sequence of physical sensory stimuli was absent and no external cues were provided.”
claim-typeexistence— “Verbal reports of memories of these specific episodes at the time of free recall were preceded by selective reactivation of the same hippocampal and entorhinal cortex neurons.”
method — evidence— “We recorded from a total of 857 units (441 single units and 416 multi units)”
object of study — evidence— “we report the activity of single neurons in the human hippocampus and surrounding areas when subjects first view cinematic episodes consisting of audiovisual sequences and again later when they freely recall these episodes”
research question — evidence— “we set out to examine how neurons in the MTL respond to cinematic sequences depicting specific episodes, and, later, when these episodes spontaneously come to mind in the absence of external stimuli, in a free-recall situation that can be reported by individual subjects”
contribution — evidence— “Verbal reports of memories of these specific episodes at the time of free recall were preceded by selective reactivation of the same hippocampal and entorhinal cortex neurons.”
transferfrom rodent hippocampal electrophysiology / spatial navigation: the place-cell response profile — sparse firing from a very low baseline, sharply selective for one condition — imported as the expected shape of a human episode-selective response— “The sparse neuronal responses arising from a very low baseline to robust firing during a specific episode are reminiscent of the responses of hippocampal place cells in rodents ( 26 ), in which a cell responds whenever the animal is in a particular place in the environment.”transfers[0]
transferfrom rodent hippocampal electrophysiology: the claim that navigational machinery was conserved and repurposed, used to license reading a spatial-memory literature as a memory literature— “The hippocampal and entorhinal machinery used in spatial navigation in rodents may have been preserved in humans but put to a more elaborate and abstract use”transfers[1]
mechanismFree recall arises when the same medial temporal neurons that encoded an episode are internally reactivated in the absence of external cues, producing the felt spontaneous emergence of a memory— “We suggest that this reactivation is an internally generated neuronal correlate for the subjective experience of spontaneous emergence of human recollection.”mechanisms[0]
mechanismtemporal precedence carries the causal weight: the neurons rise above baseline about 1500 ms before the verbal report, so the report cannot be what drives the firing— “The unit’s firing rate rose to more than 3 SD above baseline ( 15 ) about 1500 ms before onset of the verbal report of recall, peaked about 100 ms before verbal report onset, but…mechanisms[1]
mechanismthe confound is ruled out by signature mismatch rather than by exclusion: epileptic activity is synchronous across neighbouring cells, whereas the observed responses are sparse and isolated among non-responsive neighboursmechanisms[2]
mechanisman anatomical dissociation inside the same experiment serves as the control condition: medial frontal units are selective during viewing but lose that selectivity at recall

differs inrodent work on internally generated hippocampal replay (refs 27–33), which could not be tied to recall because the animal cannot declare a memory — THE AXIS IS WHETHER REPLAY HAS EVER BEEN TIED TO RECALL. 'However, the relation of such replay in rodents to recall of past navigation events has been merely conjectural.' The rodent replay literature is not disputed; the LINK to recall is called conjecture - and this record's [0] gives the reason it had to be, since free recall requires a declaration an animal cannot make. The limitation and its cause, in two rows of one paper.

differs infree recall —contrasted-with→ recognition memory — THE AXIS IS WHETHER THE EVENT IS OBSERVABLE TO THE EXPERIMENTER. 'Whereas the neuronal basis of recognition memory can be probed experimentally in human and nonhuman primates, the study of free recall requires that the mind declare the occurrence of a recalled memory (an event intrinsic to the organism and invisible to an observer).' The two are not distinguished by any property of memory - they are distinguished by WHETHER THE EXPERIMENTER CAN SEE THE EVENT HAPPEN, so the division is one of experimental access and it explains why one literature is larger than the other.

Both this and [1] point at the same missing term, which suggests the tagger had a synonym set in mind that the paper never states in one place. WHAT THE SPAN DOES SAY: that learning-period activity is reinstated at recall, measured by BOLD, with the fMRI caveat attached - a phenomenon, not a terminological equivalence, and it is already carried by other tags on this record.

When we have changed our mind. Some entries in the table begin with a word in capitals and the reason for it. EVIDENCE CORRECTED — the finding still stands, but we had quoted the wrong sentence from the paper, and the quotation has been replaced with the right one. RETRACTED — the entry itself was wrong; it stays on the page, marked, with the reason, rather than being deleted. WITHDRAWN AND REPLACED — the entry was wrong, and a corrected version of it appears in the entries below. Each mark carries its own reason, in brackets, because the reasons differ from one entry to the next. An entry we have WITHDRAWN is removed from this page and kept in the record, with its reason. A line reading Audit and a date is a later re-reading of the entry against its whole sentence: DOUBTFUL means it was kept, and the reason says what is loose about it. Quotation marks inside the tagger's sentence. Where a tag is the tagger's own sentence, a phrase in quotation marks inside it is borrowed from the paper — the tagger's wording around it is not. The paper's own sentence is the evidence quote for that row; on this page it is withheld with the article, and the article is at its publisher. Nothing inside quotation marks anywhere on this page is ours: if it is quoted, it is the paper's. Whose words a concept carries. A concept entry records a term the paper itself uses, so the term, the sense given for it, and its evidence are the paper's own words, quoted where the paper fixes them. This is the opposite of a sense entry in the tag table, which is the tagger's sentence about how the paper uses a term. Where a concept entry could not be grounded in the paper's words, the entry says so on its own row.
