Where this record's text came from. faceted 2026-08 by reading the locally held text (html); every evidence string verified as an exact substring of that text before merging. The paper is unusually sparse in self-stated limitations - only the mutual-information bias caveat and the open question about beta-band generation/read-out are stated as such, so the limitations array is short rather than padded with my own assessment. Two monkeys were used and much of the data are multiunit rather than single-unit, but the paper does not flag either as a limitation. All prior work is cited by number, so relation targets are described rather than named; no 'contradicts' or 'replicates' relation was recorded because the discussion only reports agreement with earlier work. 2026-08-13 and 2026-08-15 schema-0.3 passes: every quote verified as an exact substring of the staged text and anchored at merge time; concept terms verified present; every edge endpoint an existing node.
8 quotations on this page contain a reference number where the paper printed a superscript. This journal style prints citations as raised numerals — parameters12,13 — and the extraction flattened them into the line, so the sentence reads parameters 12 , 13 . The digits are citation markers and not part of what the author wrote. The quotes keep them for the same reason they keep every other extraction fault: a quote is reproduced exactly or it proves nothing.

phenomenonphase-dependent coding of choice in posterior parietal cortex— “We hypothesize that the encoding of decisions in the PPC should depend on the temporal structure present in neuronal activity.”
claim-typemechanism— “We test how the encoding of choice in a key decision-making node, the posterior parietal cortex (PPC), depends on the temporal structure of the surrounding population activity.”
method — evidence— “We recorded spiking and local field potential (LFP) activity in the PPC while two rhesus macaques performed a decision-making task.”
object of study — evidence— “We test how the encoding of choice in a key decision-making node, the posterior parietal cortex (PPC), depends on the temporal structure of the surrounding population activity. We recorded spiking and local field potential (LFP) activity in the PPC while two rhesus macaques performed a decision-making task. We quantified the mutual…
research question — evidence— “Previous studies have shown that coherently active ensembles of cells in the PPC predict reaction times ( 9 ) and movement choices ( 13 , 21 ) better than neurons without coherent dynamics. However, whether and how the coding of decisions depends on the temporally structured firing of PPC neurons remains unknown.”
contribution — evidence— “Choice information contained in neural firing varied with the phase of beta and gamma activity. For gamma activity, maximum choice information occurred at the same phase as the maximum spike count. However, for beta activity, choice information and spike count were greatest at different phases.”
transferfrom information theory: the MI between the spiking of a neuron and the movement condition, in or out of the response field— “We studied the encoding properties of neurons’ firing rates by quantifying the MI between the spiking of a neuron S and the movement condition C (in or out of response field) M I ( C , S ) = ∑ s , c P ( c ) P ( s | c ) l o g 2 ( P ( s | c ) P ( s ) ) . To derive the marginal and conditional probabilities of spiking and movement condition, we…transfers[0]
transferfrom circular statistics: the trigonometric moment of a phase histogram, which is how the temporal concentration of spiking is measured in detail— “In the beta-frequency band, the peak-to-trough modulation of spike counts was 13.6%, corresponding to a modulation in firing rate by about 6.6 spikes/s ( Fig. 3 B ). Spiking was distributed symmetrically about the spike-preferred beta-phase with no significant differences in the amount of spiking between the bins before and after the…transfers[1]
transferfrom cross-frequency coupling analysis: PAC and N to M phase-phase locking, imported to ask how the three time scales relate— “We found significant PAC between theta phases and beta amplitudes (permutation test, P < 10 −4 ) ( Fig. 4 A ). PAC for theta phases and gamma amplitudes (permutation test, P = 0.031) and beta phases and gamma amplitudes (permutation test, P < 10 −4 ) also was significant, albeit weaker (permutation tests, theta–beta vs. theta–gamma, P =…transfers[2]
transferfrom psychophysics: a fitted psychometric function relating the reward difference between the two shapes to the probability of choosing one— “We recorded neuronal activity while monkeys performed reward-guided look-and-reach decisions. At the start of each trial, in the baseline epoch, the monkeys maintained touch and fixation on a central target. Then, in the choice epoch, they were presented with two alternatives, a circle and a triangle, and had to choose one with a combined…transfers[3]
mechanismAn asymmetric interplay of excitation and inhibition within the beta cycle produces an uninformative upswing and an informative downswing of spiking— “Our results thus suggest that beta spiking in the PPC results from an asymmetric interaction between excitation and inhibition, producing a relatively less informative upswing and a more informative downswing of activity with similar activity magnitudes.”mechanisms[0]
mechanismBeta rhythms are tuned to large-scale network communication rather than local processing, which is why choice information becomes separated in time from local excitability— “In contrast, beta activity may be tuned to larger network scales, leading to a separation between choice information and excitability.”mechanisms[1]
mechanismDownstream ensembles read out the two rhythms with different integration windows, beta's extending past the moment of peak synchronous input to catch the later information peak— “Although the gamma activity may be most informative when spiking is greatest, the integration period for the beta activity may extend past the time of greatest synchronous activity to include a later period of peak information.”mechanisms[2]
mechanismbeta spiking is proposed to come from an asymmetric interplay of excitation and inhibition, giving an uninformative upswing and an informative downswing at similar spike counts— “Our results thus suggest that beta spiking in the PPC results from an asymmetric interaction between excitation and inhibition, producing a relatively less informative upswing and a more informative downswing of activity with similar activity magnitudes.”mechanisms[3]
mechanismthe two bands are read as two network scales, gamma as local bottom-up processing and beta as top-down linkage to a larger cortical network— “Specifically, gamma activity may reflect bottom-up–driven local processing, and beta activity may reflect top-down–driven processes that link local information to processing on a larger cortical scale ( 31 , 49 – 52 ). The coherent relationship we observe between the gamma and beta activity suggests that decision signals in the PPC arise in…mechanisms[4]
mechanismdownstream ensembles may integrate over different windows in the two bands, with the beta window reaching past peak synchrony to the later information peak— “Our findings are consistent with this view and suggest that beta and gamma activity may differ in the window of integration by downstream ensembles. Although the gamma activity may be most informative when spiking is greatest, the integration period for the beta activity may extend past the time of greatest synchronous activity to include a…mechanisms[5]
mechanismtheta may regulate the faster scales, since theta phase predicts beta and gamma amplitude— “We found significant PAC between theta phases and beta amplitudes (permutation test, P < 10 −4 ) ( Fig. 4 A ). PAC for theta phases and gamma amplitudes (permutation test, P = 0.031) and beta phases and gamma amplitudes (permutation test, P < 10 −4 ) also was significant, albeit weaker (permutation tests, theta–beta vs. theta–gamma, P =…mechanisms[6]
mechanismparietal spiking may multiplex decision signals into a beta and a gamma channel— “An intriguing possibility is that PPC spiking may multiplex decision signals into beta and gamma channels”mechanisms[7]

differs inits own explanation of the beta dissociation, by testing the beta to gamma phase difference against it and finding no relationship — THE AXIS IS THE REFERENCE RHYTHM. 'Beta-gamma phase-phase coupling could contribute to the temporal localization of the choice-MI with respect to the beta [rhythm].' The paper qualifies its own account by naming what the localisation is measured AGAINST - a self-qualification, which is the rarer and more careful use of this type. CORRECTED AT: the quote originally ended at 'could contribute to the temporal localization of the choice-MI' - THE HYPOTHESIS HALF OF THE SPAN. The paper then rejects it: 'However, we observed no correlation between the beta-gamma phase difference and the moment of the beta choice-MI phase histogram on a single-spike LFP level.' The target already said 'finding no relationship', so the row's prose was right and its EVIDENCE recorded the possibility rather than the finding. Widened through the reversal.

phenomenonphase-of-firing coding: the same firing rate carries different amounts of information about a decision depending on the phase of the surrounding rhythm — a second reading DIFFERING from the recorded value; recorded: phase-dependent coding of choice in posterior parietal cortex

When we have changed our mind. Some entries in the table begin with a word in capitals and the reason for it. EVIDENCE CORRECTED — the finding still stands, but we had quoted the wrong sentence from the paper, and the quotation has been replaced with the right one. RETRACTED — the entry itself was wrong; it stays on the page, marked, with the reason, rather than being deleted. WITHDRAWN AND REPLACED — the entry was wrong, and a corrected version of it appears in the entries below. Each mark carries its own reason, in brackets, because the reasons differ from one entry to the next. An entry we have WITHDRAWN is removed from this page and kept in the record, with its reason. A line reading Audit and a date is a later re-reading of the entry against its whole sentence: DOUBTFUL means it was kept, and the reason says what is loose about it. Quotation marks inside the tagger's sentence. Where a tag is the tagger's own sentence, a phrase in quotation marks inside it is borrowed from the paper — the tagger's wording around it is not. The paper's own sentence is the evidence quote for that row; on this page it is withheld with the article, and the article is at its publisher. Nothing inside quotation marks anywhere on this page is ours: if it is quoted, it is the paper's. Whose words a concept carries. A concept entry records a term the paper itself uses, so the term, the sense given for it, and its evidence are the paper's own words, quoted where the paper fixes them. This is the opposite of a sense entry in the tag table, which is the tagger's sentence about how the paper uses a term. Where a concept entry could not be grounded in the paper's words, the entry says so on its own row.
