Where this record's text came from. faceted 2026-08 by reading the locally held text (xml); every evidence string verified as an exact substring of that text before merging. Note the verbatim evidence for the second relation contains the paper's own typo 'IN-INT' for INT-INT; it is reproduced unaltered as required. Method is tagged electrophysiology, but the study combines high-density recording with multisite/multicolour closed-loop optogenetics and focal picrotoxin infusion, and the fourth relation shows it builds directly on the diode-probe tool paper Stark et al. 2012 (also in this batch). Replication status is untested for this paper's own mechanistic claim; the 'replicates' relation concerns a prior observation the paper reproduces, not independent replication of its own result. 2026-08-13, 2026-08-15 and 2026-08-25 schema-0.3 passes: every quote verified as an exact substring of the staged text and anchored at merge time; concept terms verified present; every edge endpoint an existing node.

phenomenonhippocampal ripple oscillations— “High-frequency ripple oscillations, observed most prominently in the hippocampal CA1 pyramidal layer, are associated with memory consolidation.”
claim-typemechanism— “These results constrain competing models of ripple generation and indicate that temporally precise local interactions between excitatory and inhibitory neurons support ripple generation in the intact hippocampus.”
method — evidence— “We used high-density extracellular recordings coupled with multisite optogenetic manipulations in awake behaving rodents (n = 26 mice; n = 5 rats) and urethane-anesthetized mice (n = 16; Table S1 available online).”
object of study — evidence— “Three classes of models for ripple generation have been proposed. The first postulates that spikes of CA1 pyramidal cells propagate at the rhythm of the ripple both orthodromically and antidromically in an electrically coupled axonal plexus”
research question — evidence— “Despite the critical role of ripples for information transfer from the hippocampus to the neocortex and for memory consolidation, and their postulated role in epilepsy (“fast ripples”; Bragin et al., 1999 ; Le Van Quyen et al., 2008 ), the local network mechanisms underlying the generation of ripples are not well understood”
contribution — evidence— “Using multisite optogenetic manipulations in freely behaving rodents, we found that depolarization of a small group of nearby pyramidal cells was sufficient to induce high-frequency oscillations, whereas closed-loop silencing of pyramidal cells or activation of parvalbumin-(PV) or somatostatin-immunoreactive interneurons aborted spontaneously…
transferfrom optogenetics: cell-type-specific activation and silencing, used here to convert a correlative question into an interventional one— “Testing of these models has been hampered by the correlative nature of most in vivo studies. On the other hand, interpretation of in vitro studies is constrained because many applied drugs are not selective for specific neuron types and can affect both SPW and ripple generation mechanisms, thus limiting separation into specific effects.”transfers[0]
transferfrom control engineering: closed-loop feedback: detect the event in real time and perturb it while it is happening— “In support of a critical role of pyramidal neurons, local PYR silencing terminated the ripple events. Ripple-contingent illumination in CaMKII::Arch mice for 20–50 ms resulted in localized suppression of PYR spiking and ripple power”transfers[1]
transferfrom signal processing: spike-train coherence between spatially separated sites as the test of a common timing source— “To increase the power of detecting second order relations between spike trains, we agglomerated the spikes of all PYR recorded on the same shank (median, 6 PYR; range, 1–33) into “summed PYR” activity and all INT spikes into “summed INT” (median, 2 INT; range, 1–9) and quantified the coherence between the resulting spike trains recorded on…transfers[2]
mechanismSharp-wave-driven transient excitation of pyramidal cells combines with the pacing supplied by interneuron-interneuron interactions to produce the ripple (PYR-INT-INT hybrid model)— “We therefore suggest that a hybrid model that includes SPW-induced transient excitation of pyramidal cells, combined with the pacing ability of interneuron interactions ( Figure 1D ; PYR-INT-INT model), can account for all known features of SPW-ripples in vivo and with most in vitro observations.”mechanisms[0]
mechanismCA1 interneuron-interneuron interactions bind multiple independent local ripple oscillators cycle by cycle into one spatially coherent event— “Thus, in addition to the CA3-generated sweep that induces local oscillations, CA1 interneuron-interneuron interactions are likely responsible for coordinating multiple local ripple events at the temporal resolution of a single cycle and combining them into a spatially coherent event.”mechanisms[1]
mechanismStronger excitation recruits the PV interneuron population more strongly, and that population sets the oscillation frequency, which is why both sharp-wave amplitude and light intensity raise ripple frequency— “The correlation between SPW amplitude and ripple amplitude and frequency on the one hand and the correlation between light intensity and iHFO amplitude and frequency on the other hand can also be explained by excitation-mediated activation of the frequency-determining PV population.”mechanisms[2]
mechanismdepolarising 80-100 nearby pyramidal cells is enough to make a ripple-like oscillation, so the minimal generating network is small— “At maximum light intensity, as many as 80–100 CA1 PYR were directly illuminated (Experimental Procedures), suggesting that the minimal network that can support ripple generation is small.”mechanisms[3]
mechanismfast GABA-A inhibition is obligatory: blocking it locally abolishes the oscillation entirely— “The full suppression of local iHFOs following GABA A receptor blockade indicates that PYR-PYR interactions alone ( Figure 1A ) are not sufficient for ripple generation and highlights the critical contribution of fast inhibition.”mechanisms[4]
mechanismPV interneuron activation cannot create a field ripple but does organise spiking into coherent ripple-frequency patterning— “Thus, although tonic light activation of PV interneurons cannot induce LFP ripples, it can organize neuronal ensemble spiking into coherent ripple-frequency oscillations, consistent with a modified version of an INT-INT-based timing mechanism”mechanisms[5]
mechanismcoherence across sites is not volume conduction; it comes from correlated input driving several local oscillators at once— “Thus, iHFOs generated by threshold single-shank illumination involve a smaller network than typical spontaneous ripples, indicating that the coherence of ripples across multiple sites observed during spontaneous ripples is not a volume-conducted effect but rather an outcome of temporally correlated SPW input to multiple oscillators.”mechanisms[6]
mechanismsynchronisation needs only the RISING phase of inhibition to be fast, because each pyramidal cell fires about once per ripple and a different set fires on each cycle— “It is important to emphasize that for ripple-related synchronization of pyramidal cells, it is sufficient that the rising phase…mechanisms[7]

When we have changed our mind. Some entries in the table begin with a word in capitals and the reason for it. EVIDENCE CORRECTED — the finding still stands, but we had quoted the wrong sentence from the paper, and the quotation has been replaced with the right one. RETRACTED — the entry itself was wrong; it stays on the page, marked, with the reason, rather than being deleted. WITHDRAWN AND REPLACED — the entry was wrong, and a corrected version of it appears in the entries below. Each mark carries its own reason, in brackets, because the reasons differ from one entry to the next. An entry we have WITHDRAWN is removed from this page and kept in the record, with its reason. A line reading Audit and a date is a later re-reading of the entry against its whole sentence: DOUBTFUL means it was kept, and the reason says what is loose about it. Quotation marks inside the tagger's sentence. Where a tag is the tagger's own sentence, a phrase in quotation marks inside it is borrowed from the paper — the tagger's wording around it is not. The paper's own sentence is the evidence quote for that row; on this page it is withheld with the article, and the article is at its publisher. Nothing inside quotation marks anywhere on this page is ours: if it is quoted, it is the paper's. Whose words a concept carries. A concept entry records a term the paper itself uses, so the term, the sense given for it, and its evidence are the paper's own words, quoted where the paper fixes them. This is the opposite of a sense entry in the tag table, which is the tagger's sentence about how the paper uses a term. Where a concept entry could not be grounded in the paper's words, the entry says so on its own row.
