phenomenon · claim-type · cross-domain-transfer · mechanism · claim-relation · replication-status · limitation — grounded in the full text| phenomenon | long-axis functional topography of the hippocampus— “One of the more predominant theories of functional differentiation within the hippocampus is a long‐axis segmentation.” | |
| claim-type | existence— “Data revealed strong support for an evolutionarily preserved topography along the long‐axis.” | |
| method — evidence | — “In a robust and unbiased methodological approach, we used coactivation‐based parcellation (CBP) [Cieslik et al., 2013 ; Clos et al., 2013 ; Eickhoff et al., 2011 ], a meta‐analytic technique, to elucidate the functional cluster profile of the left and right hippocampus.” | |
| object of study — evidence | — “Much of what was assumed about the functional topography of the hippocampus was derived from a single case study over half a century ago. Given advances in the imaging sciences, a new era of discovery is underway, with potential to transform the understanding of healthy processing as well as the ability to treat disorders. Coactivation‐based… | |
| research question — evidence | — “In fact, to our knowledge, no study has performed a comprehensive, data‐driven examination of the human hippocampus, inclusive of identifying and characterizing neurofunctional subfields, despite the plethora of theories involving differentiation of the structure across species.” | |
| contribution — evidence | — “The right hippocampal segmentation was more ambiguous, with plausible 2‐ and 5‐cluster solutions. Segmentations shared connectivity with brain regions known to support the correlated processes. This represented the first neurofunctional topographic model of the hippocampus using a robust, bias” | |
| transfer | from meta-analysis of published coordinates: activation likelihood estimation against a null of random spatial association, used here to characterise each cluster rather than to test a hypothesis— “This was computed by creating activation likelihood estimation (ALE) maps for each of the clusters, which compared the ALE scores to a null‐distribution reflecting random spatial associations between experiments with a fixed within‐experiment distribution of foci, yielding a P ‐value based on the proportion of equal or higher random values… | transfers[0] |
| transfer | from database curation: behavioral domain, paradigm class and subject population coded alongside the stereotactic coordinates of every archived study— “BrainMap archives functional neuroimaging studies by coding statistically significant results, in the form of stereotactic coordinates, with associated meta‐data such as behavioral domain, paradigm class, and subject population” | transfers[1] |
| transfer | from unsupervised machine learning: clustering that separates the voxels in the ROI into k clusters by minimizing the variance within clusters and maximizing the variance between clusters— “K ‐means clustering is a non‐hierarchical clustering method that uses an iterative algorithm to separate the voxels in the ROI into k non‐overlapping clusters [Forgy, 1965 ; Hartigan and Wong, 1979 ], by minimizing the variance within clusters and maximizing the variance between clusters. To do this, the algorithm computes the centroid of… | transfers[2] |
| transfer | from rodent neuroanatomy: the dorsal to ventral axis and its hot and cold processing division, mapped onto the human posterior to anterior axis— “Furthermore, they speculated that the ventral (anterior in humans) portion was more engaged in limbic processes (i.e., “hot” processing), and the dorsal (posterior in humans) was preferentially activated during tasks such as spatial navigation, or learned associations (i.e., “cold” processes).” | transfers[3] |
| mechanism | each hippocampal segment inherits its functional repertoire from the set of regions it is structurally and functionally wired to, so a segment connected to limbic, prefrontal, temporal and parietal cortex can carry out a correspondingly diverse set of cognitive processes— “These data suggest that these clusters are well suited to carry out a diverse set of cognitive processes given their anatomical and structural connectivity to not only the limbic system, but also regions of the prefrontal, temporal, and parietal cortices.” | mechanisms[0] |
| mechanism | the parcellation inherits the composition of its input database, and because BrainMap over-represents cognition-based studies the right hippocampus is left without a clean cluster solution— “First, the data are reliant on the BrainMap database, which heavily favors cognition‐based functional neuroimaging studies.” | mechanisms[1] |
| mechanism | the anterior portion is proposed to handle limbic or hot processing and the posterior spatial navigation and learned associations, a division carried over from rodent dorsal and ventral axes— “Furthermore, they speculated that the ventral (anterior in humans) portion was more engaged in limbic processes (i.e., “hot” processing), and the dorsal (posterior in humans) was preferentially activated during tasks such as spatial navigation, or learned associations (i.e., “cold” processes).” | mechanisms[2] |
| mechanism | the right hippocampus may be functionally heterogeneous, which is offered as the reason its cluster solution is less stable— “Our investigation supports lateralization differences given the different clustering profiles between the left and right hippocampus. The right hippocampus appears to be more functionally heterogeneous, as suggested by the post‐hoc functional decoding. This is likely also the reason for the less stable cluster solution.” | mechanisms[3] |
| mechanism | or the right hippocampus may not be organised by behavioural or stimulus features at all, so that its topography is a gradient rather than a set of parts— “Alternatively, the right hippocampus may not function under rigorous behavioral or stimulus specific features, thus the topography is less concrete, and may have a more gradient” | mechanisms[4] |
| mechanism | posterior segments connect to the posterior cingulate, a default mode hub, which is read as support for an internal attention account— “Specifically, with regard to the latter, our study revealed that the posterior portions of the hippocampus have interhemispheric connectivity leading to the posterior cingulate cortex, a pivotal hub of the default mode network. Kim ( 2015 ) posits that the posterior portions of the hippocampus, when activated, also recruit the default mode… | mechanisms[5] |
| replicates | Fanselow and Dong (2010); King et al. (2008)— “We identified neurofunctional topography of the left hippocampus, comprised of three anterior to posterior segmentations, consistent with previous research [Fanselow and Dong, 2010 ; King et al., 2008 ].” | claim_relations[0] |
| extends | Moser and Moser (1998) model and the HERNET model— “Finally, our data are in partial concordance with the Moser and Moser ( 1998 ) model as well as the HERNET model.” | claim_relations[1] |
| extends | Kim (2015) HERNET model— “Kim ( 2015 ) posits that the posterior portions of the hippocampus, when activated, also recruit the default mode network as they are partially mediated by an internal attention network, with our DTI findings providing supportive evidence of this relationship.” | claim_relations[2] |
| extends | Moser and Moser's dorsal to ventral hippocampal gradient, imported from rodent connectivity and behaviour— “Furthermore, they speculated that the ventral (anterior in humans) portion was more engaged in limbic processes (i.e., “hot” processing), and the dorsal (posterior in humans) was preferentially activated during tasks such as spatial navigation, or learned associations (i.e., “cold” processes).” | claim_relations[3] |
| qualifies | that same model, by finding hot and cold processing along the axis but also cold processing anteriorly on the right— “With regard to the Moser and Moser ( 1998 ) model, we find support for “hot” and “cold” processing along the anterior–posterior axis, but we also show that the anterior portions, particularly in the right hemisphere, appear to be engaged in “cold” processes as well.” | claim_relations[4] |
| qualifies | Kim's hippocampal encoding and retrieval network model, supporting its posterior default mode claim and not its anterior dorsal attention claim— “Specifically, with regard to the latter, our study revealed that the posterior portions of the hippocampus have interhemispheric connectivity leading to the posterior cingulate cortex, a pivotal hub of the default mode network. Kim ( 2015 ) posits that the posterior portions of the hippocampus, when activated, also recruit the default mode… | claim_relations[5] |

When we have changed our mind. Some entries in the table begin with a word in capitals and the reason for it. EVIDENCE CORRECTED — the finding still stands, but we had quoted the wrong sentence from the paper, and the quotation has been replaced with the right one. RETRACTED — the entry itself was wrong; it stays on the page, marked, with the reason, rather than being deleted. WITHDRAWN AND REPLACED — the entry was wrong, and a corrected version of it appears in the entries below. Each mark carries its own reason, in brackets, because the reasons differ from one entry to the next. An entry we have WITHDRAWN is removed from this page and kept in the record, with its reason. A line reading Audit and a date is a later re-reading of the entry against its whole sentence: DOUBTFUL means it was kept, and the reason says what is loose about it. Quotation marks inside the tagger's sentence. Where a tag is the tagger's own sentence, a phrase in quotation marks inside it is borrowed from the paper — the tagger's wording around it is not. The paper's own sentence is the evidence quote for that row; on this page it is withheld with the article, and the article is at its publisher. Nothing inside quotation marks anywhere on this page is ours: if it is quoted, it is the paper's. Whose words a concept carries. A concept entry records a term the paper itself uses, so the term, the sense given for it, and its evidence are the paper's own words, quoted where the paper fixes them. This is the opposite of a sense entry in the tag table, which is the tagger's sentence about how the paper uses a term. Where a concept entry could not be grounded in the paper's words, the entry says so on its own row.
