phenomenon · claim-type · cross-domain-transfer · mechanism · claim-relation · replication-status · limitation — grounded in the full text| phenomenon | chronic large-scale silicon-probe recording in behaving rodents— “This movie illustrates the implantation procedure of silicon probes for chronic large-scale recordings in the behaving rat.” | |
| claim-type | method— “Here, we describe methods for recording multiple single neurons and local field potential in behaving rodents, using commercially available micro-machined silicon probes with custom-made accessory components.” | |
| method — evidence | — “Each step of the probe preparation, microdrive construction and surgery is illustrated so that the end user can easily replicate the process.” | |
| object of study — evidence | — “Here, we describe methods for recording multiple single neurons and local field potential in behaving rodents, using commercially available micro-machined silicon probes with custom-made accessory components.” | |
| mechanism | Any break in the ground path (CSF to ground screw to copper wire to copper mesh to ground pin) leaves the headstage ungrounded, which is why movement artifacts and 50/60 Hz line noise appear in the recording— “the electrical path of the grounding should be checked, as any circuit interruption between the cerebrospinal fluid, the ground screw, the copper wire, the copper mesh flaps and the ground pin on the connector, would result in a large movement artifacts and/or line noise (50 Hz or 60 Hz).” | mechanisms[0] |
| mechanism | A micro-drive protruding above a too-short Faraday cage picks up environmental electrical fields, acting as an antenna and injecting noise into the signal— “If the Faraday cage is not high enough, the protruding micro-drive may act as an antenna.” | mechanisms[1] |
| mechanism | The copper-mesh cylinder encloses the headgear and shunts environmental fields and whisker-generated charge to ground, which is how it suppresses noise and slow-wave artifacts— “The cylinder also serves as an electrical shield against environmental noise and the slow wave artifacts produced by the charged whiskers in the behaving animal.” | mechanisms[2] |
| mechanism | Placing the reference over the cerebellum exploits the fact that cerebellar LFP amplitude and midline muscle artifact are both minimal, so the referenced signal carries less contamination— “This site is chosen because cerebellar LFP is the smallest of all cortical regions and muscle artifacts are minimal at this midline location.” | mechanisms[3] |
| mechanism | The microdrive design is a set of trade-offs rather than an optimum, which is why different drives suit different applications— “As a result of these competing requirements, different drives suite different applications.” | mechanisms[4] |
| mechanism | The probe shanks must be aligned parallel to the travel axis so that advancing moves them through tissue rather than cutting across it— “This ensures that during advancement, the probe shanks move into brain tissue without 'cutting' through it.” | mechanisms[5] |
| mechanism | Insulation at the bonding area keeps cerebrospinal fluid from short-circuiting the connections— “Before fixing the probe to the drive, add extra insulation to the bonding area of the probe to prevent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or humidity from producing short-circuits:” | mechanisms[6] |
| mechanism | Grounding is a continuous electrical path through fluid, screw, wire and mesh, and a break anywhere in it produces artefact or mains noise— “In addition, the electrical path of the grounding should be checked, as any circuit interruption between the cerebrospinal fluid, the ground screw, the copper wire, the copper mesh flaps and the ground pin on the… | mechanisms[7] |

When we have changed our mind. Some entries in the table begin with a word in capitals and the reason for it. EVIDENCE CORRECTED — the finding still stands, but we had quoted the wrong sentence from the paper, and the quotation has been replaced with the right one. RETRACTED — the entry itself was wrong; it stays on the page, marked, with the reason, rather than being deleted. WITHDRAWN AND REPLACED — the entry was wrong, and a corrected version of it appears in the entries below. Each mark carries its own reason, in brackets, because the reasons differ from one entry to the next. An entry we have WITHDRAWN is removed from this page and kept in the record, with its reason. A line reading Audit and a date is a later re-reading of the entry against its whole sentence: DOUBTFUL means it was kept, and the reason says what is loose about it. Quotation marks inside the tagger's sentence. Where a tag is the tagger's own sentence, a phrase in quotation marks inside it is borrowed from the paper — the tagger's wording around it is not. The paper's own sentence is the evidence quote for that row; on this page it is withheld with the article, and the article is at its publisher. Nothing inside quotation marks anywhere on this page is ours: if it is quoted, it is the paper's. Whose words a concept carries. A concept entry records a term the paper itself uses, so the term, the sense given for it, and its evidence are the paper's own words, quoted where the paper fixes them. This is the opposite of a sense entry in the tag table, which is the tagger's sentence about how the paper uses a term. Where a concept entry could not be grounded in the paper's words, the entry says so on its own row.
