What the papers say about each other

Relations one paper asserts about another, where this corpus holds both · every edge carries the sentence that licenses it

24relations
35papers
6relation types
24 of 24quoted from the citing paper
24 of 24target identified
87target unresolved

What the three numbers mean. “Quoted from the citing paper” is the relations whose evidence sentence was found in that paper’s own text (its opening, up to 120 characters, ignoring letter case). “Target identified” is the relations whose link was checked and recorded as right. What was checked: the citation, as our record of the citing paper gives it, against the linked record’s authors, year and title — its first name is the linked record’s first author, every other name it gives is an author of that record, and no other record here fits. Where the citing paper’s own reference list was read as well, the verdict on that link says so; for most links it was not. “Target unresolved” is the candidates that are not linked — a name and a year could not decide them, the check judged the match wrong, or the match has not been checked. They are listed with the reason, and they are not links.

These are not suggestions. Elsewhere this site proposes links the literature has not yet drawn, and those need adjudicating. Every relation below is one a paper states about another paper in its own words. The relation is the paper’s, not ours; what we checked, link by link, is which paper it names.

How to read a doubtful one

A citation is usually a name and a year — “Devine (1989, Experiment 2)” — rather than a title. Every relation below was matched on names and a year, never on a title, which is why a shared surname and year is sometimes not enough to tell two papers apart — and why one name and one year can fit exactly one paper here and still mean another. So a link is made only after the match was checked — the citation as our record gives it, against the linked record’s authors, year and title — and recorded as right. Anything else is NOT a link: it is listed at the foot of this page as an unresolved candidate, with the reason, and it is not counted as a relation. Relations to work outside this corpus are not shown at all: this page is only the part where both ends are here.

builds-on 9

the paper takes the other as a foundation and goes on from it

Response priming driven by local contrast, not subjective brightness —builds-on→ Processing of natural images is feedforward: a simple behavioral test
how our record describes the cited work: the rapid-chase model of response priming (Schmidt et al., 2006; Schmidt & Schmidt, 2009)
In the framework of the rapid-chase model of response priming (Schmidt et al., 2006; Schmidt & Schmidt, 2009), this view suggests that the feedforward sweeps successively triggered by the flankers and targets are still…
Disentangling conscious and unconscious processing: a subjective… —builds-on→ Experimental and Theoretical Approaches to Conscious Processing
how our record describes the cited work: Cheesman and Merikle, 1984; Dehaene, 2008; Lau, 2009; Dehaene and Changeux, 2011, who proposed single-trial subjective awareness reports
Following the suggestion to use subjective prime awareness reports on a single-trial basis ( Cheesman and Merikle, 1984 ; Dehaene, 2008 ; Lau, 2009 ; Dehaene and Changeux, 2011 ), we present a paradigm in which…
Problems with the concept of gut microbiota dysbiosis. —builds-on→ The Hologenome Concept: Helpful or Hollow?
how our record describes the cited work: Moran and Sloan (2015)
Moran and Sloan ( 2015 ) argued that the hypothesis stating that host‐specific microbial community compositions have evolved for the benefit of the host should not be accepted as the null hypothesis for explaining…
Facing Up to the Problem of Consciousness —builds-on→ A Mathematical Theory of Communication
how our record describes the cited work: Shannon (1948), information theory
I understand information in more or less the sense of Shannon (1948).
The Relation Between Perception and Behavior, or How to Win a Game of… —builds-on→ Automaticity of Social Behavior: Direct Effects of Trait Construct and…
how our record describes the cited work: Bargh, Chen, and Burrows (1996)
In a series of studies, Bargh, Chen, and Burrows (1996) demonstrated such unconscious and unintentional effects of perception on social behavior.
GENETICS OF NATURAL POPULATIONS. XIX. ORIGIN OF HETEROSIS THROUGH NATURAL… —builds-on→ GENETICS OF NATURAL POPULATIONS. XII. EXPERIMENTAL REPRODUCTION OF SOME…
how our record describes the cited work: Wright and Dobzhansky (1946) and Dobzhansky (1947a, b) population-cage results on within-population heterosis
Indeed, experimental populations kept in so-called "population cages" have shown that the inversion heterozygotes which carry two third chromosomes with different gene arrangements derived from the same population are…
On the Automatic Activation of Attitudes —builds-on→ Semantic Priming and Retrieval from Lexical Memory: Roles of…
how our record describes the cited work: Neely's (1977) semantic priming investigation and its short- versus long-SOA pattern
This finding is reminiscent of one from Neely's (1977) investigation.
Information Processing in Living Systems —builds-on→ A Mathematical Theory of Communication
how our record describes the cited work: Shannon information theory (1948)
In 1948 Shannon asked whether we could attach a number to the amount of information we gain
Estimation and Inference of Heterogeneous Treatment Effects using Random… —builds-on→ Recursive Partitioning for Heterogeneous Causal Effects
how our record describes the cited work: the honest causal trees of Athey and Imbens [2016]
Following Athey and Imbens [2016], our proposed forest is composed of causal trees that estimate the effect of the treatment at the leaves of the trees; we thus refer to our algorithm as a causal forest.

the paper reports a result incompatible with the other's

Monkeys show recognition without priming in a classification task —contradicts→ Repetition Suppression in Monkey Inferotemporal Cortex: Relation to…
how our record describes the cited work: Mcmahon & Olson (2007)
Given the short delays used (mean = 1.9 seconds), it is likely the monkeys would have recognized the primes and, thus, this study does not provide evidence for implicit priming in monkeys.
Differential Receptive Field Properties of Parvalbumin and Somatostatin… —contradicts→ Parvalbumin-Expressing Inhibitory Interneurons in Auditory Cortex Are…
how our record describes the cited work: Moore and Wehr (2013) on PV frequency tuning breadth
The discrepancy between Moore and Wehr study and our current result may be due to different targeting methods (optogenetics aided indirect targeting vs. visually guided direct targeting).
Differential Receptive Field Properties of Parvalbumin and Somatostatin… —contradicts→ Parvalbumin-Expressing Inhibitory Interneurons in Auditory Cortex Are…
how our record describes the cited work: Moore and Wehr 2013, which reported PV neurons as sharply tuned as excitatory cells in the same species and area
However, a recent study also in mouse auditory cortex reported that PV neurons were as sharply tuned for frequency as excitatory cells ( Moore and Wehr 2013 ). In that study, tuning bandwidth was compared by fitting the…
Isolating neural correlates of conscious perception from neural… —contradicts→ Experimental and Theoretical Approaches to Conscious Processing
how our record describes the cited work: proposals that the P3b is a neural correlate of conscious perception (Sergent et al., 2005; Dehaene and Changeux, 2011; and others)
The current study, however, provides evidence against this view, as the P3b along with another component subsequent to the VAN (the LOP) did not consistently correlate with awareness.
Repetition Suppression in Monkey Inferotemporal Cortex: Relation to… —contradicts→ Neural Mechanisms for Visual Memory and Their Role in Attention
how our record describes the cited work: the sharpening model of repetition suppression (Desimone 1996; Wiggs and Martin 1998)
They clearly conform more closely to the predictions of the scaling model (Fig. 9B) than to those of the sharpening model (Fig. 9A).
The Role of Category Accessibility in the Interpretation of Information… —contradicts→ A Spreading-Activation Theory of Semantic Processing
how our record describes the cited work: the spreading activation approach of Collins & Loftus (1975) as an account of social priming
It also suggests that an "interference" interpretation of the sort postulated by Wyer and Srull (in press) may be more appropriate for describing the processing of complex social stimulus information than the spreading…

Ensembles of human MTL neurons “jump back in time” in response to a… —extends→ Oscillatory patterns in temporal lobe reveal context reinstatement during…
how our record describes the cited work: Manning 2011's finding that recall reinstates the pattern present during study of preceding items
However, there are two important limitations of that study. First, it is not clear whether the context reinstatement effect generalizes to the level of units. Second, because the order of free recall is unconstrained…

how our record describes the cited work: Srull and Wyer (1979, 1980), Bargh and Pietromonaco (1982), Bargh et al. (1986), and Carver et al. (1983)
These findings extend those of Srull and Wyer (1979, 1980), Bargh and Pietromonaco (1982), Bargh et al. (1986), and Carver et al. (1983) in demonstrating that in addition to trait categories, stereotypes can be primed…
dna2vec: Consistent Vector Representations of Variable-Length k-mers —extends→ Continuous Distributed Representation of Biological Sequences for Deep…
how our record describes the cited work: BioVec (Asgari and Mofrad, 2015) and seq2vec (Kimothi et al., 2016)
Although both techniques used a two-layer neural network to train their embedding, our technique is a generalization for variable-length k.
The Role of Category Accessibility in the Interpretation of Information… —extends→ Category Accessibility and Impression Formation
how our record describes the cited work: Higgins, Rholes, and Jones (1977)
In so doing, they supplement and extend an earlier study by Higgins, Rholes, and Jones (1977).

Differential Receptive Field Properties of Parvalbumin and Somatostatin… —replicates→ Parvalbumin-Expressing Inhibitory Interneurons in Auditory Cortex Are…
how our record describes the cited work: Moore and Wehr (2013) on PV intensity tuning
Nevertheless, PV neurons showed significantly lower ISIs than excitatory cells ( P < 0.01, K–S test), indicating that PV neurons were less intensity-tuned, which is consistent with the observation in a recent study (…
Automaticity of Social Behavior: Direct Effects of Trait Construct and… —replicates→ Stereotypes and Prejudice: Their Automatic and Controlled Components
how our record describes the cited work: Devine (1989, Experiment 2)
This finding corresponds to that of Devine (1989, Experiment 2), who found that the automatic effect of the African American stereotype on social perception did not vary as a function of level of consciously expressed…
The Relation Between Perception and Behavior, or How to Win a Game of… —replicates→ Automaticity of Social Behavior: Direct Effects of Trait Construct and…
how our record describes the cited work: Bargh, Chen, and Burrows (1996)
With these results, the findings of Bargh, Chen, and Burrows (1996) were replicated using a different priming procedure, different stereotypes, and a different dependent measure.
